Professional work from Meta's Horizons Workrooms

During my time working at Meta (formerly known as Facebook), I worked collaboratively with the Reality Labs team on the new and innovative Horizons Workrooms.

My responsibilities on the project started off with developing an exterior for the virtual reality workspace that grounds the office in some sort of geographical reality. I worked a lot on the pre-production of the exterior, seeing what worked, blocking out the space, and creating a set of rulesets that helped create an environment fit for VR and that was interesting in all directions. The environment was then taken on by Ocean Quigley who did a fantastic job of taking it to a polished standard, but I thoroughly enjoyed driving the initial development of the space. Unfortunately, I can not show my workings on the environment but hopefully an explanation if interesting enough.

Designing a new space

After working on the exterior environments for Workrooms, I moved on to creating some new interior designs on top of what had already been created. Below is the design for the more relaxed room in form of a reskin:

Furniture for the Beach

Afterward, I moved on to help design and create furniture for the new ‘beach’ environment for a new update to the app. I was made responsible for designing and creating new chairs and tables that would fit into the new environment. You can see some of the final designs below:

The Lobby

The Lobby is the area a user first sees when they launch the app. I worked with concept artist Manuel Martin to bring the Lobby from concept to completion and make sure it was ready for VR from a performance standpoint too. It had to have a cozy and safe feel to it, so we looked at soft lighting and pleasing colors that make it a comfortable space to sit in.:

The VC Screen (Video Chat)

I also helped design and create the VC screen in a huge collaboration with the Designers and Software Engineers. I worked hard on visualizing the different states the VC would be in and how it would look in those states (from the VC being off to it being on with many participants on the screen at once). This gave the Software Engineers direction as to how it would work technically in the app. This was a hugely collaborative task but one that turned out nicely. You can see the final results below:
